It’s not about us…

We have learned from every person who has been part of the KEYS Community. Every KEYS earner brings new wisdom to share.

Creating a modality to spread the philosophy of KEYS in support of human well-being has been our career-long passion and everyday pursuit. We are Masters level educators with a combined century of experience. Our focus has been working with students who have mental health diagnoses. Services have been delivered in the home, school and community settings.

After being teachers, social workers, counselors, mental health workers, school administrators, and business owners…

Our new goal is reaching every human on the planet with our online KEYS Community so that no one feels alone, left out, or left behind!

Why are you on this team? Why does this MATTER to you?
Bringing the BIG LIFE KEYS philosophy to as many people as possible is my passion and my purpose. I have been lucky to witness so many people change their lives for the better using the BIG LIFE KEYS Curriculum; and, I use it daily as I try to live my own BIG LIFE. Creating an online KEYS Community matters to me because too many people feel alone and left out. KEYS is for everyone! Everyone matters!

What is your role in BIG LIFE Publishing LLC?
Co-founder, current owner…and THE luckiest learner while creating this curriculum with the input of so many great KEYS Earners over the years.

What are your credentials? (Work History)
I have a Master’s in Education from Old Dominion University and a Bachelor’s in Music Education from West Virginia University. For over thirty years I have worked with people with very challenging circumstances that put them “at risk.” From family shelters to group homes to high school special education classrooms to starting a behavioral health company and a special education private day school, my career has been all about supporting safety, dignity and opportunity for living a BIG LIFE.

What does your BIG LIFE include? (Outside of BLP)
My BIG LIFE includes my big family (human & fur), great friends, playing and writing music, boating, making stuff and day dreaming…

What is one of your favorite “KEYS Moments?”
Our special education day school was built on the BIG LIFE KEYS philosophy and we all shared the common language of KEYS. The most powerful thing I witnessed time and again was when one student “used their KEYS” to help a fellow student who was struggling. This happened too many times to count – and that’s a beautiful thing for everyone!

Why are you on this team? Why does this MATTER to you?
Having BIG LIFE KEYS is the answer to “So What?” – what are we going to do about the challenges our children (and us, the adults) are facing at school, in the home, and the community. I’ve seen firsthand in my classroom how using the KEYS has changed students’ lives, enabling them to overcome obstacles, set goals, and grow their opportunities. Using the KEYS in my personal life is second nature and helps me move through my own life experiences day to day, often minute to minute. My wish is that every child and human being will have access to this curriculum and be able to live their own BIG lives with safety, dignity, and opportunity.

What is your role in Big Life Publishing LLC?
My main contributions to BIG LIFE Publishing include character animation, video production and being the voice of the majority of the characters. I collaborate on curriculum development, and assist with providing professional development.

What are your credentials?
Masters of Education, 2015, University of Phoenix, Major: Special Education
Masters of Education, 2010, University of Phoenix, Major: Secondary Education
Bachelor of Arts, 2008, James Madison University, Major: Political Science
Childhelp, Special Education Teacher, 2011-2013
KEYS Academy, Elementary Special Education Teacher, 2013-2017
Independent Contractor/Consultant, 2018-Present

What does your BIG LIFE include? (Outside of BLP)
My BIG LIFE outside BLP includes spending time with my daughters, Juniper and Ivy, and my husband Matthew. Rescuing and raising our zoo of animals on our small farm, hanging out with friends and family, cooking fresh from our garden, and reading fill my free moments with love and light.

What is one of your favorite “KEYS Moments?”
The beautiful thing about KEYS moments is they happen so fluidly once the tools and strategies are learned. I have many favorite KEYS moments from my professional and personal life. One of my favorite memories as a Special Educator happened in preparation of our graduation ceremony. All K-12 students came together to write, compose, and perform a drum chant using their own experiences with the 7 KEYS. It provided an opportunity for the children to take pride in demonstrating their own personal accomplishments in a dignified way, and a creative outlet to show that THEY mattered, and WE (the adults) were listening.

Why are you on this team? Why does this MATTER to you?
The work of Big Life Publishing LLC reflects my philosophy of approaching social emotional learning with self-direction, skills and confidence. Although students with disabilities have been my focus for many years, the KEYS Curriculum gives all individuals experiencing life’s challenges a set of tools with which to approach them.

What is your role in Big Life Publishing LLC?
As the former Director of the first KEYS Academy, I created a school environment that was grounded in the BIG LIFE KEYS philosophy and curriculum. With this first-hand school-based implementation experience, I provide guidance and consultation in the creation and presentation of new KEYS materials.

What are your credentials?
Masters of Education 2001 Old Dominion University
Major: Special Education

Bachelor of Science 1979 University of Maryland
Major: Therapeutic Recreation

Public School Special Education Teacher 1994-2011
Director of Private Day School 2011-2017
Consultant Mentor/Director 2017-Present

What does your BIG LIFE include? (Outside of BLP)
My Big Life includes sharing a life with my husband of over 40 years, spending time with my adult children and enjoying a semi-retired life of hiking, gardening, reading, and spending time on the lake. My retirement is balanced with the privilege of sharing my knowledge acquired from years of experience with the experts, my students.

What is one of your favorite “KEYS Moments?”
One of my favorite KEYS memories is of two students trying to decide what to do about a parent difficulty that one of them was experiencing. One student said to the other “well, have you tried noticing when she does something right?” He then said “the KEY I respond to best is Human Factor. I really like it when my parents or coach notice that I am good at something for a change. Maybe parents do too!”

We believe every person that has ever been a KEYS learner has contributed to what BIG LIFE KEYS is today.

Also, many professionals over the years have added their expertise and unique talent to making our curriculum a living, breathing, work in progress that gets better with every person who touches it.

We are grateful for the significant contributions of co-workers who were instrumental in the creation and implementation of KEYS.
A special thanks to Deborah Moore, Co-Founder and counseling guru!
Many, many thanks also to the many, many contributions and support of Lisa Cooley, Sue Garnett, Mindy Willingham, Christine Inscoe, Melissa Tate and Trepin Tate.

SHOUT OUT to all the staff at KEYS ACADEMY for their tireless efforts for students and for using BIG LIFE KEYS every day in a meaningful way!

“GET YOUR ONE ON!”

Why are you on this team? Why does this MATTER to you?
I’m on the team to add extra musical flavor to a great message. This is important to me because I know every person needs help to achieve their BIG LIFE and everyone deserves a chance to live it!

What is your role in BIG LIFE Publishing?
I create the music behind the Welby N raps and provide voiceover work. I have also been known to throw down a rap if needed.

What are your credentials?
I’m a trombonist and I teach music lessons for low brass instruments as owner of Brass Academy LLC in Loudoun County, Virginia. I hold musical performance degrees from Virginia Tech (B.A.) and Penn State (M.M.), and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Brass Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Colorado Boulder (D.M.A.).

What does your BIG LIFE include? (Outside of BLP)
My BIG LIFE includes my smart, beautiful wife, Erin, and two sons, Clark and Luke! It also includes a big family of parents, sisters, cousins, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law! For hobbies, I like to play guitar, carve wood, play games with friends, and spend time with my family.

What is one of your favorite “KEYS Moments?”
I use Key 2 knowledge often to take care of myself and my family and give us our best chance for success. For example, some basic human needs, like needing interaction with other people and needing to feel free are harder to achieve lately (during the pandemic). The tools provided in Key 2 help us to take a good look our situation and to be thankful for what is going right in our lives. The tools are also great for making sure that our friends and family get what they need to achieve their Big Life, too!

What is one of your favorite “KEYS Moments?”

Top Dog Sampson

Why are you on this team? Why does this MATTER to you?
I am on this team because humans need as much support as possible. It matters to give each other unconditional love and support.

What is your role in BIG LIFE Publishing LLC?
I am the inspiration for the character “Spirit” and basically the spiritual leader of the group.

What are your credentials? (Work History)
I graduated from basic dog training in 2010 but my lived experience has made me the Master of everything (at least in our household).

What does your BIG LIFE include? (Outside of BLP)
Fetching without returning, long lazy walks with my humans, endless tug-o-war, getting the last bite of any human’s meal, taking up the whole couch for a good snooze.

What is one of your favorite “KEYS Moments?”
I am pretty good at being grounded in the present so my favorite way to use KEYS is to hold safe space for my humans to “flow to one” by laying right on top of them so they can’t move and they have to focus on their breathing…works every time!

Ann Long

Why are you on this team? Why does this MATTER to you?
When I retired from public education after twenty-five years, I had the opportunity to re-evaluate my goals and knew that continuing to be of assistance to people in my community was what mattered to me. Big Life Publishing LLC provides that opportunity and I am proud to be a part of this important work.

What is your role in BIG LIFE Publishing LLC?
I currently help wherever help is needed… BLP cheerleader and sounding board, voiceover work, data collection and analysis, editing materials, etc.

What are your credentials? (Work History)
I have worked in the disability field for over 35 years in both the public and private sectors. Throughout my career, I have advocated for the rights of individuals with disabilities so that each person has the opportunity to work toward and achieve their own goals and dreams. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from George Mason University, a Master’s degree in Transitional Special Education from George Washington University, as well as a Special Education Leadership Certificate from George Mason University.

What does your BIG LIFE include? (Outside of BLP)
My Big Life includes family, friends, swimming, kayaking, yoga and other mindfulness activities. I am married and make my home in Virginia with my two- and four-legged family. We are grateful to be able to spend time with our children and grandchildren on a regular basis.

What is one of your favorite “KEYS Moments?”
After a district decision negatively impacted my students, the students began questioning me about the decision. We discussed “what’s in the way” and as a group, wrote a letter to the Director of Special Education who reconsidered the policy and changed the practice. The confidence of the students and their ability to self-advocate grew tremendously through that one action toward living their Big Lives.
